Jack Simons published a 110-page article (J. Phys. Chem. A 2008, 112, 6401) entitled Molecular Anions in which he overviews much of the past thirty year’s theoretical and experimental research on a wide variety of negative molecular ions. This is the first paper published by J. Phys. Chem. that incorporates active hyperlinks to web pages of scientists working in the field. learn more...

Michael Bartl, Jeremy Galusha and colleagues from BYU and IBM reported the discovery of a diamond-based photonic crystal found in iridescent scales of a Brazilian beetle (Phys. Rev. E 2008, 77, 050904(R)). The discovered structure has one of the most-desired photonic architectures and is the first example of a diamond-based photonic crystal operating at visible wavelengths. learn more...

Faculty Positions
The Chemistry Department has two tenure track positions in the general areas of biological, inorganic and physical chemistry. Interdisciplinary research areas are of particular interest especially those with an NMR emphasis. While the openings are at the assistant professor level, exceptional senior candidates may be considered. For the full text ad click here

New Faculty Member
Dr. Kenneth Woycechowsky has joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor working in the area of Biological Chemistry. Ken received his B.S. from Penn State (1994), Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin, Madison (2002) and worked as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at ETH-Zurich (2002-2008). For more information click here

Summer Schools on Theoretical Chemistry
Jack Simons recently established a biennial series of summer schools on theoretical chemistry, the first of which will be held on July 19-25, 2009 in Telluride, Colorado. For this school’s topics, lecturers and intended audience click here

Summer Research Program
The Department of Chemistry is soliciting applications for a summer research program for outstanding undergraduates majoring in chemistry. The program is open to undergraduate chemistry majors who will graduate in 2010 and plan on attending graduate school in chemistry. The summer program begins May 27 and runs for 10 weeks through August 5. Participants will receive a $4200 stipend, plus housing and up to $500 for travel. Separate arrangements can be made for students on the quarter system who need a later start and finish. For the full description of the program and application form click here
